Terms of Service
The terms under which AnoVeil is licensed, paid for and used.
One detail is outstanding. AnoVeil is operated by an independent developer whose company registration is not yet complete, so the contracting entity in section 1 and the governing law in section 12 are not yet named. The rest of these terms describes the agreement accurately and applies as written. AnoVeil is also free to use during the private beta, so no payment obligation under section 4 arises today.
1. The agreement
These terms are an agreement between you and the independent developer who operates AnoVeil ("we", "us"), covering your use of the AnoVeil application, this website and the AnoVeil account service. Once company registration completes, the registered entity will be named here and will stand in our place under this agreement.
By creating an account, authorising a device, or using the application, you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, do not use AnoVeil.
2. The licence we grant you
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to install and use AnoVeil for your own work or your organisation's work, for as long as your subscription is active or the application is offered free of charge.
You may not:
- Resell, sublicense, rent or redistribute the application.
- Reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble it, except to the extent that applies despite a contractual restriction under the law where you live.
- Work around, disable or tamper with licensing, device authorisation or the signature checks that enforce them.
- Remove or obscure any notice of ownership in the application.
We own the application and everything in it. You own your documents. Nothing here transfers ownership either way.
3. Your account
You need an account to authorise a device. You must give an email address you control, keep your password and any two-factor method secure, and tell us promptly if you believe someone else has access. You are responsible for what happens under your account. You must be old enough to enter a contract where you live, and at least 16.
4. Price, billing and the free period
AnoVeil is currently free. During the private beta there is no charge, no payment details are collected, and nothing in this section creates a payment obligation.
When we begin charging:
- The price will be $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year, billed in advance for whichever period you choose. The pricing page states the price in force at the time you subscribe.
- AnoVeil runs for seven days from first launch without a licence key. Nothing is charged during that period.
- Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period until cancelled. You can cancel at any time from your account portal, and access continues to the end of the period you have already paid for.
- Prices are exclusive of sales tax or VAT, which is added at checkout where it applies.
- If a payment fails we may retry it and may suspend protected functionality until it succeeds. Your codebook, vocabulary and unfinished work stay on your disk regardless.
- We will give you at least 30 days' notice by email before any price change affecting you, and you may cancel before it takes effect.
We will not start charging existing free-period users without telling them first and giving them the choice to decline.
5. Device authorisation
A subscription authorises one device. Authorisation is bound to the device rather than to an installation, so reinstalling or updating AnoVeil on a device you have already authorised does not consume another slot. You can revoke a device from your account portal at any time, and the slot is freed immediately.
The application checks with our service when it starts in order to confirm that the subscription is still active and the device is still authorised. If a check fails, or authorisation has been revoked, protected functionality stops being enabled.
6. Acceptable use
You agree not to use AnoVeil:
- To break the law, or to infringe anyone's rights.
- To process documents you have no right to process, or to defeat an obligation you owe to someone else about how their information is handled.
- To attack, overload or probe our services, or to attempt to gain access to parts of them that are not yours.
- To circumvent licensing, as set out in section 2.
7. What AnoVeil does not promise about accuracy
Detection is not perfect, and we do not present it as such. In our own testing on a sixty-document corpus, AnoVeil finds approximately 76% of person names in its high accuracy mode. Across test runs that figure has ranged between 76% and 85%. Structured values — email addresses, phone numbers, account and card numbers and the postcodes inside street addresses — are caught considerably more reliably, because they have a shape to match. The security page publishes the current measured figures.
AnoVeil reduces exposure; it does not eliminate it. The review step exists for this reason. You must read every anonymised document before you share it, and you remain responsible for deciding whether it is safe to share. We are not liable for information that detection missed and that you did not catch at review.
AnoVeil is a tool. It is not legal, medical, financial or compliance advice, and using it does not by itself make you compliant with any law, regulation or professional obligation.
8. Your documents
Your documents are processed on your own device and are never transmitted to us. We therefore do not ask for, and do not receive, any licence over your content — there is nothing for such a licence to apply to. What leaves your machine, and what never does, is set out in full in the privacy policy and on the security page.
The one exception is a bug report you choose to send, including any screenshot you attach to it. That is described in section 6 of the privacy policy, and it happens only when you press Send.
Your codebook is yours alone, and we cannot recover it. It is stored on your machine, optionally under a password only you know. If you lose it, or lose the password and the recovery key, documents you have already anonymised cannot be restored — by you or by us. Keep a backup.
9. Availability
Document processing runs locally and keeps working whether or not our services are reachable, subject to the authorisation checks in section 5. The account portal and the licensing service are provided on a reasonable-efforts basis, without a guaranteed uptime commitment, and may be interrupted for maintenance. We are a small operation and we say so rather than promising a service level we cannot staff.
10. Warranties and liability
AnoVeil is provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent the law allows, we exclude all implied warranties, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement.
To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, loss of profit, loss of business, or loss or corruption of data. Our total liability arising out of or in connection with these terms is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, or fifty US dollars.
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded. If you are a consumer, you have statutory rights that these terms do not affect.
11. Suspension and termination
You may stop using AnoVeil at any time, cancel your subscription from the account portal, and delete your account there. We may suspend or end your access if you materially breach these terms — in particular sections 2 and 6 — and, where the breach can be put right, we will tell you and give you a reasonable opportunity to do so first.
When the agreement ends, your licence to use the application ends. Everything on your own disk — your codebook, your vocabulary, your documents and any unfinished review — stays exactly where it is, because we never had a copy. Sections 7, 8, 10 and 12 survive termination.
12. Governing law
The governing law and venue will be stated here once company registration completes. Until then, nothing in these terms limits your right as a consumer to rely on the mandatory law of the country where you live, or to bring proceedings in its courts.
13. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. If a change materially affects you, we will tell you by email to the address on your account at least 30 days before it takes effect, and you may cancel before then if you do not accept it. The date at the top of this page shows when the current version took effect.
